T-Shirts Crossing Over

As the average age of the global population begins to decrease, and the population numbers begin to increase at an alarming rush, the apparel industry has been gearing up for a more pedestrian alternative to everyday wear. It seems their research has pointed them in the direction of an old Navy issue – the T-Shirt. Since entering service almost a hundred years ago, the t-shirt has since retired from the army and joined the civilian ranks around the world.

Hollywood Icons

In its spare time, the t-shirt has even made it so fray into Hollywood where the likes of Jimmy Dean and Fonzie have made the white t-shirt the only match to leather jackets. In a time when simplicity ruled the day, t-shirts captured the imagination of a generation that catapulted it from mere heavy duty inner shirt, to every day outer wear. An impressive transformation especially since the T-shirt is one of those things that has become a mainstay in every closet. Regardless of whether the other occupants are tuxedos and suits or if they’re coveralls and jeans, the t-shirt has found its home.

Rugged Ware

It even pulls double duty. From working all day in the fields, it is also an accompanying apparel to go to bed. College t-shirts have been the in-thing since a long time past and till today, it is normal to put on the oldest t-shirt in the closet along with sweats and socks and read a good book on a rainy spring day.

Summer Ware

Even if the weather warmed and the mercury began its upward assent, the t-shirt was still the choice, in fact, the better choice and if it got too hot, the t-shirt was easily removed. As the ages have matured and the genders less divided, this humble cotton whites has become her favorite too. The loose and comfortable cotton that covers the skin but reveals the form is something that never seems to go out of style or leave the imagination.

Moving from summer to fall and on to winter, the t-shirt may still remain in active duty. Retirement does not seem to be in this hardy apparel’s vocabulary. It can always be worn under a shirt as an undershirt that serves to keep you warm outdoors and once you hang up your coat indoors, the t-shirt is enough to keep you cool with the heater on. The T-Shirt is one of the most admirable ways to keep warm, keep cool and be comfortable all in one.

Famous Hawaiian Shirt Wearers: Bright Has Always Been The New Black

The Hawaiian shirt might not be the most humble of wardrobe items and, for the most part, seems to be the uniform of the early retirement, slightly larger than large man eager to show that after a career spent in button down collars and drab suits he can be fun. Don’t allow this fact to deter you. A Hawaiian shirt can be cool, something these fellows know and demonstrate perfectly.

Elvis

For periods this was an Elvis staple. The King loved Hawaii and this was reflected in his wardrobe. His collection of shirts was apparently large and splendid. The acting career of Elvis was punctuated with a variety of films set around the islands and his cool went off the scale whilst exhibiting the finest of shirts playing Chadwick Gates in Blue Hawaii.

Hunter S. Thompson

Famed for his gonzo journalism Hunter loved a Hawaiian shirt. It was part of his style and he tended to opt for particularly loud variations. If you’re in doubt about the ‘cool’ of this guy don’t be. He invented shotgun golf with Bill Murray at 3:30 am.

Tom Selleck

Magnum PI to many people might have actually damaged the image of the Hawaiian shirt. This to me is a pure fallacy. Admittedly, tucking it in to tight white shorts was probably a bad idea. Nevertheless when coupled with a Ferrari and a manly mustache Tom was a resident of hip-ville!

Chunk

Truffle shuffle! The roundest member of the goonies was a purveyor of the Hawaiian shirt and was not averse to raising it on high to perform his signature dance, which quickly became the scourge of portly kids the world over. When it is all said and done though, everyone loved Chunk.

Tony Montana

It is fair to say that Tony Montana brought an edge to the Hawaiian shirt. Notably a chainsaw shaped edge in the film’s most gruesome sequence. Add to this coke-fuelled shoot-outs and plenty of inappropriately aggressive behavior and an association with Scarface would seem like a bad thing. However, whether you see De Palma’s movie as a warning on the corrupting nature of cash and power or an aspirational blueprint on coming from nothing and becoming something, the Hawaiian shirt is central.

Quagmire

He loves the ladies and the ladies love him. And I’m pretty sure it has a lot to do with his trademark Hawaiian shirt. He might have a foot fetish, hate Brian and have unresolved issues with Cheryl Tiegs, but that’s why we love him, right?

Romeo

Baz Luhrman gave the Shakespearean heart throb a bit of a makeover when DiCaprio took the role in his spunky teen opera version of the classic tragedy. One of the updates was to don Romeo in a spectacular blue Hawaiian shirt, along with the rest of his Montague crew as they skulked and quarreled on Verona beach. Inspired.

Ricardo Smith has a fine collection of Hawaiian shirts that light up the Find Me A Gift office where he spends his time reveling in the world of novelty gifts.
